An Actor is Self-Employed
Being an actor is a bit like being the owner of a business. The business is that of selling. The product on sale is you. It's hard to get noticed, and unless a strategy is devised in order to get noticed it probably won't ever happen. You can be the best actor in the world, but if you're invisible who's going to know it? A part of the tuition is the ongoing discussion about how best to raise your profile. We can sort out your c.v., your head-shots/photos, your covering letter, your plan of campaign. What happens if you don't have a plan of campaign? We make one. (We can do new fully professional head-shots in-house as part of your tuition sessions).
Getting an acting job is tough enough. Building a career is really difficult. It's no good bagging a two month contract if you're then going to be unemployed for the following six months. In order to survive in the industry you have to think of creating it from the foundations up until it's established. It's a case of placing one building block on top of another. We can focus on how best to do this.
The Foundation
The aim should always be to attempt to build something that lasts. Taking your first steps towards a career in acting is exciting, but it can also be quite daunting. You need to be tough with yourself if you are going to succeed in this profession. You therefore need to have the commitment to attend each and every class and once you have agreed the timescale it is important to keep turning up, except in cases of genuine emergency, as reliability and punctuality are key habits to develop and maintain in this most competitive of professions. Acting tuition isn’t reserved for highly talented and experienced actors and actresses. Studio Eye’s Acting Studio Course classes can help you improve your communication skills, develop self-confidence, and relieve stress.
Our tutors focus on diction and dialogue. You will discover how to enunciate so everyone can hear and understand you, experiment with new tones that add meaning to your vocalisations, and you will become more confident in the unique voice you have. You will also feel more comfortable in your body than ever before. “A tense instrument cannot fully express itself.”
Every session or class will begin with a series of activities built to relax your body and voice with things like breathing exercises and physical poses. Whether you walk into acting class after a stressful day at work or home, you will be able to drop off some baggage while you’re there. Some dramatic scenes require you to tap into passionate emotions like anger, despair, hatred, love, shame, and yearning. While this is far from easy for any relative newcomer to acting, you’ll become more comfortable tapping into your full emotional range as time goes on.
Many acting classes will require you to prepare your own monologue, which is a great opportunity to express some feelings that have been held in, or you could select a monologue that makes you think about whatever you’re going through in real life (effectively giving you a much-needed emotional outlet where no holds are barred).
You can expect to meet many different types of people who come from a variety of ages, backgrounds, and world-views. You can expect to become quite close to your new friends in acting class, as you’ll all be actively working to improve your communication, body confidence, and ability to express your emotions.
Working on these things together has a way of creating an emotional connection you will grow to be thankful for.
The Acting Studio classes will change your life for the better. You will be able to express yourself more clearly with better diction and more enunciation, and feel more comfortable and “at home” in the body that is yours and yours alone.
Think of it as personal development.
